“There are far too many stories to remember and not enough pages in this book…” So says Kevin Conran, in his behind-the-scenes chronicle of the making of Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow, which already spans 274 pages.

This Dynamite publication takes us into the world of Kevin Conran, and his epic quest to transform raw ideas into the $70 million dollar 2004 motion picture starring Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie. The film emulates and pays tribute to 1940s movie serials, and is groundbreaking in the use of “DYI” CG, scale models, and green/blue screen special effects.

In the book, we are treated to an in-depth examination of first drafts, scenes from the cutting room floor, and the ‘how, when, and why’ of certain characters. There are soooo many illustrations and photographs that document the making of this film. The 40s/steampunk look, the creation of rayguns, robots, and automobiles. The clever use of early low-budget 3D apps, coupled with photographs mapped onto shapes. It goes on and on and is well organized and completely amazing.

This is a must-have and a keeper of a book for anyone who loved the movie, and for amateur and professional visual storytellers alike.

Dynamite, Kevin Conran’s Sky Captain and the Art of Tomorrow, standard edition $34.99 for 274 pages.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
