Image Comics releases another superhero comic who is a retired hero who bounces back to action in some environment for the love of nature in Frontiersman the first volume.

So have you ever imagined that there’s a lumberjack superhero who protects nature, but then retires for some personal reasons, however right over his hero moments, he fought robots, robbers, and some other enemies who threaten to destroy nature? That’s your type of hero which is the miniature version of your tall tale favorites. The story is written by Patrick Kindlon and illustrated by Marco Ferrari. Patrick has worked with some top-tier creators on titles at Black Mask, Aftershock and Z2, mostly he wrote stories that focus on the supernatural, cults, crime, and superhero comics. And Marco is a comic book artist from Italy, he collaborated with some different writers from different publishing companies for comics, he’s done a lot of commissions on Tumblr which mostly everything that you see in his art is drawn out of ink, screen tones, and pencil on a Japanese A3 paper for illustration, his art is just like Gurihiru, but not in a child-friendly manner.

The front cover shows the hero itself who is posing like Paul Bunyan, but the concept would be perfect if you add a blue buffalo as a sidekick but no, make way for a human who is assisting him. And his weapon is supposed to be an animal’s head? I mean is that supposed to be a staff?? Whoever came up with the character design, someone is obviously playing Turok all over again. There’s nothing else to talk about it’s just a plain old man wearing a furry mask who carries a wolf’s club and lives his life in the forest. It almost takes me back to that episode of Static where he meets Soul Power, a veteran superhero.

The story starts in a forest where the main character was talking on the phone while smashing robots who wander around the forest. He comes back home when someone is sabotaging his house, which is a fanboy who is looking for Frontiersman which is this old man who smashes robots, even though he’s way too young to remember what he truly is. Right on the next panels, you’ll see the Frontiersman who had some past battles between enemies who is half mechanics, four-armed women, robots, and more robots. However, the enemy this time is some environmental group just to cut down some trees and stuff. He met some old friends in the past, and right after that, he started training himself again in his old state. Regarding his ego, he’s still got some fighting in him. Who will protect mother nature?

The comic truly has some good points, the storytelling about a veteran superhero is not enough, but the action scenes between the two characters is something you would look into. I’d imagine that this comic would be more like a vigilante version of a lumberjack man, but what I see is more like Turok who carries a club, fighting interdimensional creatures AND ROBOTS. However this comic, the Frontiersman is at the top of a tree to protest not to cut down the trees and destroy the environment.

I got to say about the art, and it’s not that bad at all. I just kept going with some webcomic posts, but even so, when you see a comic with some good quality, there’s always a bigger fish to catch. The characters are very well detailed, so does the landscape around the forest, what I’m most impressed by so far is how Marco contributes to drawing some of the action scenes that are so epic to witness. Either way, I can’t complain something about his art because his art almost reminded me of Gurihiru, and somehow this is what I want to witness how these action scenes truly look like. The comic is great, amazing, good fun, and that’s the kind that I’m here for to review, and I’m looking forward to reading more of the Frontiersman and his duty to protect the forest.
