Hunter has been dumped by her foster family and has only a tentative link to her real roots, courtesy of a certain book.

She’s a wild grrrl, and has already been attacked by vampires! It turns out she’s on the run from an ancient, deadly cult. It’s issue two of Cult of Ikarus from Scout Comics!

This is one wild ride, literally. The motorbike race from hell, the pell-mell dash through the indigo surroundings… Jenna Lyn Wright (lettering by Taylor Esposito) keeps the narration tense, the dialogue even more intense. The beats of the pace are like drums to the skull; twists and savagery, cut tight and edited for bravery. Thanks to artist/colourist Karl Slominski, Cult of Ikarus has a ’spiky’ feel to it, with angular art lines, jagged collisions, and figures hitting the forty-five-degree mark as they tumble from panel to panel.

I like the ‘what has happened previously’ summary that is seamlessly stitched into the narrative. I like the sense that anything can happen at any time, and probably will. I like the sudden shifts from pages with eruptions of violence, to the relative calm of tightly detailed streetscapes, where we catch our breath and have a gander around.

It’s harsh and hard-hitting, it’s intelligent and brightly coloured, it’s a mature story about vampires and the seemingly indestructible, untrustable, the rust-free, and a permanent press epic drama. Catch it now!

Scout Comics, Cult of Ikarus #2, $3.99 for 30 pages of content. Mature readers

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
