Dark Horse Comics releases another sci-fi comic about something related to real-life a few years into the future with some Star Wars fanatics in Errand Boys the graphic novel.

So whatever happens if you take Han Solo and Chewbacca, without the Millenium Falcon and flat broke, and then you’ll get some job search to do some errands of some creatures in another universe with lots of trouble, then this comic is just for you. I can’t scratch my head if this comic is heavily inspired by Star Wars because to me it sure looks like this comic is telling the story of Han Solo and Chewbacca in a nutshell. The story is written by D.J. Kirkbride and illustrated by Nikos Koutsis. Kirkbride got his start in comics as an editor and writer on Image Comics’ Eisner and Harvey Award-winning Popgun anthologies. However, he’s also the author of the cosmic space opera The Bigger Bang series. And Nikos is a Greek artist working on comic books for quite some time. One of his career highlights in comics are Errand Boys, Mighty Man, and Stretch Armstrong. He’s also a teacher at Vacalo Art and Design College, teaching students at a Comics Workshop.

The front cover of this comic looks nothing more than a rip-off version of Han Solo from Star Wars. The character designs between the main characters make you think that you’re reading another Star Wars story including Han Solo and some blue humanoid alien who is being attacked by the meaty version of Jabba the Hut. I get that the concept was more look like, but I feel like I’m reading another story. What’s the purpose of creating a story such as Errand Boys when you can take a piece of Han Solo and turned into this.

The story starts with some lazy sport named Jace Lopaz who’s being chased by someone, which probably gives you a definition of a character trait of Han Solo. He was being hired by some errand woman who actually wanted her family heirlooms out of a cardboard box. However, his background is much more different from other scoundrels in the galaxy. Jace hasn’t seen his father and his half-brother for years. Even though he has problems with his family, his mom left them because his father is lazy and selfish and died in a car accident, but his brother is alive and stayed over his place. He and his brother have gone on a lot of adventures with a lot of trouble, mysteries and all, and of course, there are some Savage Dragon character cameos. I mean is this comic actually on Dark Horse or Image Comics? Then there are the flashbacks at every end of the chapter, I mean what does has to do with the story? Moreover, the story seemed to be a big adventure between the brothers with a little drama and a lot of action and adventures, so it’s probably a good comic if you want to see some of the Star Wars-inspired rip-off series.

The story is similar to Star Wars, but at the same time, you’re just reading another Han Solo story. For a short comic like this, it’s more worth telling the story and somehow despite everything, it’s a fun sci-fi comic to read. The story is almost originated from an autobiography mixed with sci-fi dressing, which is how the writer described how this comic relates to Star Wars in a nutshell. The art is almost like what you see in the old comics like Marvel and such, but when I see the main character’s expressions, he looked a little manly on the first page when he’s running away from someone, his cheeks are almost pressed which makes him manly, or what you saw the even handsome Squidward from Spongebob. I can’t say for sure that there are many expressions that explain how the main character is a deadbeat. And then there are the designs of the aliens and the creatures from different planets, I can’t think of another monster design where these two are being attacked by some ruffians with motorcycles, a giant man-eating monsters, a giant bird monster, and some other weird creatures that you’ve never seen before. It’s a big space adventure between the two, so it’s quite worth reading it.
