Perry White, the long-suffering editor of the Daily Planet, gets a tip of the hat in DC Comics’ Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen’s Boss Perry White #1.

It’s a long-winded title for an editor, sure. But White, the cigar-chomping tough guy, in my opinion, was the template for J Jonah Jameson, the editor in Spider-Man comics.

Anyway, this special comic reprints some favourite Perry White stories from the archives, and adds a sprinkle of today’s news in the form of a story written by fan-favourites Matt Fraction, illustrated by Steve Lieber, Nathan Fairbairn and Clayton Cowles.

Then there are two throwback tales in the 1970s written by Elliot S! Maggie, illustrated by veteran Superman illustrator Curt Swan.

Plus a few other stories, including a quick snippet of “Truth”, from 2019’s Superman #18, plus a less-compelling twelve-page “Old Men Talking In Bars”, from 2011.

Six stories, or truncated tales in this collection, making it a really good summer nostalgia read at an excellent price!

DC, Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen’s Boss Perry White #1, $4.99 for 48 pages.

About Alan Spinney

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
