Dark Horse Comics and Webtoon continue with the most awe-inspiring Sci-Fi webcomic which is Space Boy Volume 13. To be honest, other than this series,

I stopped reading other Webtoon comics because as a comic artist and reviewer I’ve been collecting so many good comics and art books on this site to get inspiration and write a review about them including one of my favorite creators and comics such as Stephen himself, Gurihiru, Berserk, TMNT and one of the Brubaker and Phillips comics on Image Comics. And I’m too busy doing my webcomic series every month, the Webtoon comics in this age right now are not that pleasant, there are too many cringy stories that made me want to do my work, and collect and review comics from them. However for Space Boy, it has been 2 years since I last reviewed the sixth volume, but I kept going to see the story through, and so far this is the only best Webtoon series that I’ve ever read and collected.

Anyway, the front cover looks more like a change of scenery. Nice, really beautiful, the first thing you see is a seagull who is standing tall around the front cover of the book. Other than Cassie wearing a pretty red dress, or Zeph in front of Amy’s house who apparently just slept with her, he gave out to illustrate a Seagull. I mean did Stephen just run out of ideas to put any of the main characters on the front cover? Why not put Riggs or that mediocre director for a change? But let’s focus on this cover art, first of all, I have never seen a comic book front cover art of a bird standing at some port. Could it be a sign, or a meme when a seagull tilts its head and started screaming? The one thing I do like about this composition is when Stephen illustrates a seagull on the back side and then it took a big white teardrop dump all over Amy’s head in her dream sack with the number 13 at the bottom right of the front cover. I mean for Fred Fuchs’ sake, this cover art is like having someone illustrating the meme version of the ‘MURICA eagle with sunglasses and smoking a cigarette while playing that catchy Team America song, that would be awesome, except this series is for kids and younger teens. The quote on the back cover intrigues me which wrote by Caleigh Havasek: “If you haven’t been reading Space Boy, you’re missing out on a wonderful graphic story that has delightful characters, engaging storylines, and a lot to love.” And he’s right I am missing out because I was merely waiting to have Stephen fill out more than 10 episodes to read and release more volumes to collect, it is a wonderful story. Let alone having Webtoon creators publish more stories for everyone to read WEEKLY. As long I don’t have to go and read another cold and ugly webtoon sober as you vicariously watch me strangle the life out of- sorry, never mind; back to the story.

So jumping up ahead with the Homecoming Dance, Amy’s about to get killed by some FCP officer, the abduction, the Golden Age arc of young Oliver, has announced that Amy is dead or missing, now we left off at the part when Qiana gives her a tour of the organization right until she reunites with Dr. Kim. And then Amy described the flavor of those people that taint of copper and iodine which makes everyone filled with toxins inside of mind and body. However, for Qiana, her flavor is all plum and apple on the inside but there’s something else that makes her flavor become rotten and that’s because the officer who abducted her was her teacher. She has a grudge against her, and she doesn’t know the fact that the officer was poisoned and killed by the director of the FCP. So Dr. Kim shows Amy his lab and what she sees is some Terminator-looking android with “a bit of bare-bones” as he said, and claims that it would be “Oliver’s next full-body prosthetic.” I’d imagine if Dr. Kim would modify Oliver’s voice as Arnold Schwarzenegger from The Terminator with his famous quote saying “I’ll be back”, I would jump out of joy if someone does that. So he does all the work by himself because he fired all the other technicians for the lack of repairing the number of androids that he built for Oliver. Meaning that Dr. Kim felt uncomfortable having a group working on the androids.

>The reason behind the mystery of Oliver is that Dr. Kim is building a body and it’s the only that he’ll survive in life after the artifact, meaning he’s on an expedition on investigating the artifact which is a huge silver tear drop at the depths of space just to realize the true nature of his imprisonment. And somehow when that time comes, Oliver would forgive him, then Amy forgives him for that incident of assassination. Speaking of, Qiana gave her a pair of net gear glasses to Amy and had a message from Dr. Kim that she can talk to Oliver remotely. She did give a call to him, and to be honest, he and Dr. Kim were never that close because he can’t forgive him for what he did to Amy and for being stuck there without ever contacting the outside world, her family, and friends. And then after that, they chatted for a few hours until Qiana comes back to her room. And then the rest of the scenes you’ll see Amy’s dream fighting her darkness as if she’s Jolyne Cujoh who is being attacked by an enemy stand, and her stand is the alien-looking cyclops. Wow, ok now I’m getting a bit of deja vu I can’t even call this a children’s book and a Webtoon material anymore if Stephen starts to include the part of the story with destruction and death between Amy and that officer Saito, this is at least accurate comic book series I have ever seen. This couldn’t have been any less faithful to any other comic if Stephen include some of the manga references. Let alone having Amy being enslaved in that organization. Let me tell you something, maybe you just saw something that makes you think that you’re going to watch another episode of Jojo, or maybe you had a glimpse about it. If you think that I’m joking, well that is a very rational way of thinking. But the strange thing is… I’m not joking. I’m serious. What I have seen with my own eyes IS A SPACE BOY COMIC BOOK SERIES THAT HAS STONE OCEAN REFERENCES. Ok as a Jojo fan, that is the best scene that I’ve ever witnessed. After that, she calms down and she starts to settle down and get along with Qiana at the end of this book.

As much as I like reading this series, I’d much prefer to read his graphic novels than go through Webtoon, because sadly at this age right now I don’t see any good comics right now. Again, I didn’t read any other creators’ webtoons because I was far more interested in working on my webcomic series and someday turn into a graphic novel for Dark Horse or Image Comics. I’ve been on Webtoon posting my webcomic there, but there are a lot of downsides to webtoon, I’m only there because I’m a dedicated author.

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts of Stephen on Instagram and there are some good possibilities about his work, however, there is one post that got my attention where Stephen is drawing a WIP work of Qiana, and claimed that he was never quite satisfied with his art and asks himself that being unsatisfied is a prerequisite to greatness? That applied to every creator out there even me. So I asked what he meant and realized that there is a difference between him pushing himself to do better and beating himself up. Everyone is going through a different journey, no matter how unsatisfied you are as a creator, you kept going drawing your own comic that you truly love to do. I would believe so because I haven’t drawn comics for a decade because I was inexperienced and I went through a long journey, enrolled in a community college, met new people, and learned so much about art and creative writing.

The drawings and paintings that I created so many years, I didn’t find any satisfaction in them as I drown myself in darkness worrying about my future. I’ve been training myself between life and death when I decided my fate, I realized that there is life around the art that I created, nothing is perfect and I found the strength to keep moving forward, and created my first webcomic. Nothing is perfect than the power to keep moving forward, I had the honor of proving with my art on my illustrator and a Japanese instructor’s philosophy. I made so many mistakes as an artist and myself in the past that I can’t look back. Until then I kept going not caring whether my artwork is perfect or not or struggling between the stupid numbers of followers dropping on social media. I may not be a famous artist or creator but now I’m fighting for myself against myself and I won’t stop pursuing my own ambitions. As for other creators out there, if you’re willing to be a comic artist, you best overcome your weaknesses before you start publishing on Webtoon Canvas. I have enough going through my small story. But as for this, I will keep reading Space Boy, because it’s becoming more interesting later on Webtoon.
