Specs, issue two, from BOOM! Studios focuses (ha ha) on the further misadventures of a group of teens. They have received a pair of novelty glasses via “Special Delivery”, and the glasses are magic! But it isn’t all fun and games when bad things begin to happen.

Writer David M. Booher (Canto, All-New Firefly, etc) folds us into the story, quietly immersing us into the drama: what will the guys do about victims of the glasses’ magic? What to do about the glasses? What to do, what to do? Booher is effective in convincing the reader of the confusion, these teen guys who have no clue, no destination in sight. Time stands still as they ponder, ever more enraptured and in turn terrified, by the power of the glasses.

Artist Chris Sheehan (House of Slaughter, etc) draws the teens in a particularly hypnotic way. That is, the poses, the gestures and facial expressions are convincing, not ‘made up’. So natural, looking effortless. It’s a rare artistic ability, to be sure, with the closeups, the pivoting point of view, the intimacy, and the awkwardness of the guys in trouble. Colour is thoughtful yet powerful, courtesy of Roman Stevens. Lettering looks casual but delivers a punch, thanks to Jim Campbell.

I have no trouble recommending this title to readers. The drama is here, the characters are rich with details and conflicts. It’s a smooth read, intensely involving yet quietly delivered.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
