Looters and plunderers they may be, but the Mighty Barbarians have teamed up to fight a common foe. It’s issue one of Ablaze’s The Mighty Barbarians, of course!

Writer Michael Moreci sets the tone of this saga by showing us the stakes, and they are high. There is an evil, unstoppable force afoot in the land, and it’s clear that sorceress Morgan Le Fey needs help to vanquish this foe. And Kull is on the team, yay!! The dialogue is powerful, the scenes nicely combine action and character development.

Artist Giuseppe Cafaro, with Barbara Nosenzo on colours and Jim Campbell on letters, provides loads of dramatic closeups, exotic scenes of the open desert, open taverns and openly awe-inspiring fights to the death. There are beasts, demons, and warriors, all rendered in a great array of poses and expressions. Nosenzo takes full advantage of the opportunity to push the colours, heavily saturating the surroundings in powerful indigos, crimson, and golds.

It’s off to a really fun start; we’re meeting the heroes and villains while things move along quickly toward big conflicts and major death matches.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
