Web of Carnage takes a deeper, nastier look into the madness of the bloodthirsty crimson symbiote after Eddie Brock–Venom became the new “King in Black” after Knull’s defeat. Now free of the shackles of needing a host and gaining the ability to travel through dimensions, Carnage is more dangerous than ever before.
This is not my first time reading about Carnage but the first time I read a story where Cletus Kassidy was not the host. The lack of Kassidy cast a spotlight on Carnage that showed me a different side of the psychotic symbiote that was more than just some killing machine being steered by a serial killer.
In this issue, Carnage reminds me of a rebellious teenager who just got a taste of freedom and is running wild with it by defying his parents. The parent, in this case, being Venom. The first issue of this series seems to imply that we’ll see Carnage on a wild journey of blood, guts, and pure carnage (pun intended) and to grow strong enough to face Venom, and if they are as powerful as gods then their battle could literally rattle the Marvel universe.
This issue has everything I expected in a Carnage story. A lot of blood, gore and corpses, while also taking the opportunity to express more of the red symbiote in ways I’ve never expected and I look forward to the rest of the series.
