The movie opens in the old west, with a lone horseman, or in this case, a horsewoman, riding into town. We see that is actually Wonder Woman (Stana Katic), but in cowboy clothing. She helps the local townfolks from a corrupt landowner. From there we find ourselves in a fantasy land, where Batman (Jensen Ackles), dressed like a bat version of Conan, is a mercenary. He leads a group of heroes after an evil wizard. From there we focus on a young FBI agent, actually Superman (Darren Criss), is trying to track aliens in America in the 50’s. All three of these heroes are unaware of who they actually are, and they must figure out what is happening to them and find out the truth.
Warworld is the latest feature-long animated film that is part of the Tomorrowverse. This is now the 6th entry in this line. It’s taken me a while to warm up to the Tomorrowverse, but I have accepted. But this film I am unsure of.
I’m an avid comic reader, so I am very familiar with Warworld, but this film confused me a little, but each segment is related to comics.
Wonder Woman in the Old West is an homage to the Elseworlds story The Justice Riders. Batman reminds me of the first part of the Return Of Bruce Wayne. Finally, Superman’s 50’s story really reminded me of The New Frontier. So pulling from all these sources was really interesting. Plus there are a lot of Easter Eggs, and deep cuts in terms of supporting characters.
The script by Jeremy Adams, Ernie Altbacker, and Josie Campbell more serves as a prelude to the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earth feature. While it wasn’t bad, I didn’t feel it was that great.
Director Jeff Wamester does a good job bringing all of this together. Since the voices for Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman have already been established. It’s the casting on the supporting case that was impressive. There is a lot of talent with years of voice work experience. And overall Wamester brings everything together.
Extras include two features:
Illusions on Warworld on how Warworld was changed from a gladiatorial area, into something more complex.
The Heroic, the Horrible, and the Hideous go into the choice to use Martian Manhunter, Lobo, and Mongul.
Overall Warworld was a pretty good watch, especially with the differences in each hero’s seqment. It’s worth a watch, but I’m not sure if you really need to own it for your collection
Justice League: Warworld is currently available on Digitial Download, Blu-Ray, and DVD now.
