IC alumna celebrates an illustrious career at alma mater.

ITHACON is excited to announce Shelly (Roeberg) Bond as a guest at this April’s ITHACON 47. An IC Class of 1988 alumna and lover of Britpop and ‘80s music, Bond has become an important contributor in the comics industry.

As an Ithaca College undergraduate, Bond was very involved in both ICB-TV and WICB radio station. Her comics career started at Comico, The Comic Company, where she learned the ins and outs as an editorial assistant. She then quickly moved on to DC’s Vertigo imprint as an assistant editor, and worked her way up to full editor and VP-Executive Editor. Bond spent over two decades at DC Comics where she created DC’s first young adult imprint, Minx. She’s best known for editing multiple Eisner Award-winning comics including The Sandman, The Invisibles and Fables, and the comics to TV hits i-Zombie and Bodies.

Bond incorporates her personal punk-rock aesthetic into all her projects, most notable in Black Crown, an imprint she created and curated for IDW. As a self-publisher and freelance editor, Bond has successfully utilized the crowdfunding model to curate many anthologies including Femme Magnifique: 50 Magnificent Women Who Changed the World, Hey, Amateur!, and Insider Art. This publishing strategy continues via Off Register Press, a comics and design lab, that Shelly and her husband, artist Philip Bond, run to publish their personal work. Highlights include Geezer, written by William Potter and illustrated by Philip Bond, and Shelly’s graphic memoir/editing books, Filth & Grammar: The Comic Book Editor’s (Secret) Handbook and Fast Times in Comic Book Editing. Bond also edits the multiple Eisner Award-winning series Bitter Root for Image Comics and teaches Comics Editing at Portland State University and through Off Register Press.

Bond is best known for her collaborative editing style that leaves a metric ton of red ink on her hands.

“I discovered comics in 1987 through my fall semester screenwriting class during my senior year. But it was the countless hours spent editing videotape and being a DJ that truly informed my comics editing work. I can’t wait to get back to Ithaca and meet more comics makers and enthusiasts.” (Shelly Bond)

At ITHACON 47, Shelly will be joined by her husband, artist Philip Bond. Both Shelly and Philip are ready to meet fans, speak at panels, and sell their Off Register books. ITHACON is especially honored to host an IC alumna.
