- Yvan Alagbé, the groundbreaking French artist and editor whose Yellow Negroes and Other Imaginary Creatures debuts at MoCCA from New York Review Comics. He will appear at MoCCA with both NYRC and with Frémok.
- Belgian cartoonist and editor Max de Radigues, whose account of his time as a fellow at the Center for Cartoon Studies was part of the Official Selection at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée in Angoulême in 2012.
- Zinester-turned-graphic memoirist Nicole J. Georges, whose perceptive observations of self and setting have won over readers of Calling Dr. Laura and Fetch.
- Dominique Goblet, who challenged assumptions about autobiographical comics with Pretending is Lying (New York Review Comics) and whose work continues to blur boundaries between the self and the other, truth and fiction, and fine art and comics.
- International indie comics superstar Anna Haifisch, whose The Artist comics are serialized on vice.com and whose works have been translated around the world. Her latest book is Von Spatz (Drawn and Quarterly).
- Jaime Hernandez, who revolutionized independent comics when he and his brothers published Love and Rockets #1, and whose career-long narrative work has earned the lifelong devotion of countless readers. At MoCCA he will debut his first work for younger readers, The Dragon Slayer (TOON Books).
- Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes, who has produced a distinguished body of traditional and animated editorial cartoons for The Washington Post and recently debuted her latest book, Trump’s ABC (Fantagraphics).
Price of admission is $7 per day and will grant attendees access to the Fest including the Exhibitors Hall, on-site Gallery space, and programming. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door. About the Artists:
Yvan Alagbé was born in Paris and spent three years of his youth in West Africa. He returned to study mathematics and physics at the Université de Paris-Sud, where he met Olivier Marboeuf. Alagbé and Marboeuf founded a contemporary visual arts review called L’oeil carnivore and the magazine Le Chéval sans tête (“The Headless Horse”), which gained a cult following for its publication of innovative graphic art and comics. Labeling these artistic collaborations as “Dissidence Art Work,” Alagbé and Marboeuf soon founded their own publishing house, Amok, drawing from the material serialized in Le Chéval, including the first version of Yellow Negroes and Other Imaginary Creatures. In 2001, Amok partnered with the publishing group Fréon to establish the Franco-Belgian collaboration Frémok, now a major European graphic novels publisher. Alagbé lives in Paris. Alagbé appears at MoCCA with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and New York Review Comics.
Nicole J. Georges is a writer, illustrator, podcaster and professor from Portland, OR, who has been publishing her own zines and comics for 20 years. Two volumes of her zine Invincible Summer have been collected by Tugboat Press and Microcosm Publishing. Her graphic memoir, Calling Dr. Laura, is a Lambda Award Winner. Nicole won the Sunburst Award for Excellence in Arts Education in 2012. She was the 2013 Fellow at the Center for Cartoon Studies, the 2015/16 Donaldson Writer in Residence at the College of William and Mary, and currently teaches at California College for the Art’s MFA in Comics Program. Her latest book is Fetch: How a Bad Dog Brought Me Home (Mariner/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt).
Dominique Goblet
Dominique Goblet was born in 1967 in Brussels, Belgium, and studied illustration at St. Luke’s Institute. Known for her wide range of artistic mediums and eclectic style of visual storytelling, she was an early contributor to the comics publisher Fréon’s anthology Frigorevue. Involved from the start in the creation of the experimental comics publisher Frémok, she published several books with them: Portraits crachés (1997), Souvenir d’une journée parfaite (2002), and Les hommes-loups (2010). At the same time she worked with the Parisian publishing house L’Association and published two books with them: Pretending Is Lying (2007) and Chronographie (2010), a book of double portraits of her and her daughter made once a week for ten years; both received a number of nominations and prizes, including the EESI award at the Angoulème festival and the Prix Töpffer. Most recently she has published Plus si entente (Actes Sud BD/Frémok), a collaboration with the Berlin artist Kai Pfeiffer. Artist, comics author, and professor of comics and illustration, she is also certified as an electrician, plumber, and welder. Goblet appears at MoCCA with the support of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.
Anna Haifisch
Anna Haifisch was born in 1986 in Leipzig, Germany. She studied at the Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig (2004-2011) and worked as a screenprinter for Kayrock Screenprinting in Brooklyn. In 2013 she co-founded the comics and graphics festival “The Millionaires Club.” She draws the weekly comic The Artist for vice.com. Her books in English include Drifter(Perfectly Acceptable Press), The Artist (Breakdown Press), and most recently Von Spatz (Drawn and Quarterly). Anna lives and works in Leipzig. She appears at MoCCA with the support of the Goethe-Institut and Rotopol Press.
Jaime Hernandez was at the forefront of the post-underground/alternative comics revolution when he and his brother Gilbert co-created the Love and Rockets comics series in 1982. Jaime is renowned for creating dramatic – and occasionally comedic – novelistic stories chronicling the travails and joys of Maggie and Hopey, two vivacious, complex Hispanic women growing up within the LA punk scene. Over the last 35 years, readers have watched his growing cast of characters argue, break up, make up, make love, grow older in real time, and have delighted in seeing the comics medium brought to a new level of maturity. Fantagraphics Studio Edition: Jaime Hernandez collects almost 200 pages of raw, un-retouched original Love and Rockets art at the size it was created. At MoCCA he will debut his first work for younger readers, The Dragon Slayer (TOON Books). Hernandez appears at MoCCA with the support of TOON Books and Fantagraphics Books.
Max de Radigues
Max de Radiguès is a cartoonist and an editor at the Belgian publishing house L’employé du moi. In addition to publishing works by international authors, L’employé du moi publishes grandpapier.org, an international hub for online comics. De Radiguès is the author of more than a dozen books and has contributed to countless anthologies in Europe and North America. He spent time as a fellow at the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont; his account in comics from his time at the school, Pendant ce temps à White River Junction, was part of the Official Selection at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée in Angoulême in 2012. His English-language work Moose was serialized by Oily Comics, and was published in a collected edition by Conundrum Press in 2015. His latest book, Bâtard, was published in 2017 by Casterman. An English-language edition of his book Weegee: Serial Photographer is forthcoming from Conundrum Press. He appears at MoCCA with the support of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.
Ann Telnaes creates editorial cartoons in various mediums – animation, visual essays, live sketches, and traditional print – for The Washington Post. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for her print cartoons and the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year for 2016. Telnaes’ print work was shown in a solo exhibition at the Great Hall in the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress in 2004, and her work has been collected in numerous books. Telnaes was recently the President of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) and is a member of the National Cartoonists Society (NCS). Her most recent book is Trump’s ABC (Fantagraphics).
