Another gripping issue of Gideon Falls, from Image Comics. This time, we learn more about the Black Barn.
In this episode, “Twin Shadows”, Writer Jeff Lemire and Artist Andrea Sorrentino (Dave Stewart on colors) bring more development in the mystery at Gideon Falls.
Two parallel stories are unfolding; a mental patient and his counselor are starting to share ‘visions’. This combined experience is bringing them together.
Meanwhile, newly arrived priest Father Fred and Sheriff Miller are beginning to work alongside too.
Oh, and there is hypnotism going on, to get to the bottom of the secrets. And, who are The Ploughmen??
Is this enough to pique your interest? The story is intense, the dialogue terse and descriptive. The artwork is a combination of realistic and graphic/scratchy. What I mean is that the faces, figures, and buildings look realistic, like photos. But the photos are manipulated grainy, high contrast. Sorrentino also has fun with panel shapes, which change depending on the mood and characters involved in the scene. This is fine stuff indeed; we are getting to read high-end creative work here!
