The new chapter of Action Comics, #1006, from DC, is entitled “Invisible Mafia”.
Clark Kent is on the beat, trying to get to the bottom of the treachery going on at City Hall. In this issue, we get more, much more regarding the Red Cloud. Hmm, that’s probably enough plot information to reveal in this review!
I continue to like is how Superman is being handled by Brian Michael Bendis. Bendis is advancing the story, a complex multitiered beast of a tale. He is also giving us small, revealing moments into what it’s like to be Superman. It ain’t easy for a super guy to monitor the subtext and subcultures of a planet, all the while wandering around in a suit and tie. He strikes a balance between observing humans while using his superpowers, and also respecting their human limitations. How does Superman resist simply ‘killing’ any human that seems to be evil? It’s his compassion.
Ryan Sook has found the right feel for Superman. His art, with Brent Anderson’s colouring, brings a realism to this series that makes me think of the Bronze Age days when Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson (no relation, I think) handled the title. ‘Real’ in the sense of ‘central casting real’, that is; realistic but populated by good-looking, well-proportioned people.
It’s a finely meshed adventure comic, combining big big moments with thoughtful slices of life.
