Kendra AKA Hawkgirl and Green Lantern are caught in the crosshairs as an armada of Thanagarians and a trio of Green Lanterns hunt them down.
As the battle outside the temple brews, Martian Manhunter hurries to uncover the secrets that the captive Martian elder has been withholding from him. What secrets will he discover about the ancient being known as Perpetua? what times does Manhunter have to Perpetua? What will change his entire outlook on himself, the Martians and the rest of the universe? All of that will be answered as the Hawkworld arc concludes here!
I think this issue displays Snyder and Tynion at their best when it comes to their writing on Justice League. Whenever each of the writers are writing an issue on their own, it’s strong, but not as strong as it should be. But whenever they are on the book together, it always delivers with the best results. In this issue, Snyder and Tynion reveal some secrets that will have readers scratching their head in regards to Martian Manhunter and his ties to the Totality and possibly the DC Universe as a whole. Heck, there is some information that the Martian Elder reveals that kinda changes the way readers see the DC Universe and get people speculating on the internet.
In regards to the structure of the plot and story, the writers make effort to give readers a good glimpse of what and who Perpetua is, and how her history and legend plays a role in the multiverse’s potential destruction. With all of the build up from issue 1 to present, the reveal about Pepetua and how she factors into everything feels rightfully earned. When it comes to introducing new concepts within continuity, it can go away if it’s just something that is put in without a great deal of thought or explanation that makes sense to the continuity of everything. But given that the writers have been developing everything to this reveal, it just feels like a earned and welcomed edition to the continuity of the DC Universe.
As for the art, Segovia and Mark Morales handle the Thanagar Prime segments well! Segovia’s pencils and Morale’s inks shine in the Thanagar segments, giving it the kind of energy that the script needs to make it all effectively work. Aside from Segovia, Cheung gets a bit more page time within this issue and it’s beautiful, from the cross hatching to the figures on the stage, it just looks fantastic! Sometimes I wish to see a full issue with Cheung’s work but knowing that each artist works at a pace that can only do so much with a fast schedule, this may be as good as it gets. But even with what we get, it’s still solid. This series continues to shape the DC Universe in interesting ways that can’t be missed. I recommend adding this to your pull list for new comic book day!
