I’m not big on stories about elemental Gods, and how they fight with each other for dominance. Not really my thing. But then I read Aquaman issue 45, from DC Comics.
I have to admit, seeing the Aquaman movie made me want to read a few issues of this long undervalued comic character. I picked up issue 44 (check out my review by searching on The Fanboy Factor website) and was really impressed by the tone of the storyline and the visuals.
Likewise, I am taken with issue 45. You see, our buddy Aquaman is sailing on the ocean with his red dressed pal, Caille. So far, so good. But see now, it’s never that simple. Enter a villain, one of the Gods! It’s Namma! There’s a whole mythology around this God, with its loves, hates, jealousies, and revenge.
Okay, I’m just leaving it there. But seriously, this tale, Unspoken Water, written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and penciled by Robson Rocha, inked by Daniel Henriques and coloured by Sunny Cho, is just breathtaking. Not just ‘it’s underwater so of course, it’s breathtaking’, but truly beautiful to read. Nicely phrased, nicely and poetically paced, and very nicely visualized before our very eyes.
Blink twice and you’ll miss a great read. Check it out.
