Naomi, who are you?

Naomi #5, from DC, explains it. Naomi is Unleashed!

Written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker, and beautifully illustrated and coloured by Jamal Campbell.

Naomi, brought to earth, thinking of Superman, and raised in obscurity. This is issue 5, and actually, this could have been issue 1. Why not begin with the origin? Instead, this issue has that “At last, at LONG LAST!!” feel. Naomi spills, dishes out the story to a new friend. How fortunate for us readers that we are allowed to eavesdrop!

It’s teen angst, but so incredibly rendered by Campbell, we can forgive all the stalling and postponing of Naomi’s ‘story’. Bendis gives us his trademark series of little dialogue boxes, vertically stacked on top of each other. Page after page after page after page. It’s stream of consciousness, but we are also aware, so really conscious that Bendis often unravels his narrative in this fashion. Fashion forward, perhaps, but a bit predictable to see double page spreads of a static image with stacked vertical boxes, going on and on.

But I’ll not go on about it, suffice to say that the hitch is now released, the trailer is free to roll, the narrative is open and dramatic, and big things are again coming, just around the bend, from Bendis, in just the very next issue!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
