Unearth, from Image, has hunkered down and burrowed in deep for its third issue. And God help us, the caves are alive with the sound of screaming.

As I write this, Hurricane Dorian has just passed by, leaving death, destruction, and chaos in its wake all up the Eastern Seaboard of North America, after pummeling the Bahamas senseless. There is no power, no internet, no phone. God help us.

Now, imagine this happening deep in a cave in Mexico. Not a Hurricane, of course, that would be silly, like SharkCaveNadoDorian. But the chaos, loss of communication. And the cave perhaps being some sort of manifestation of the human subconscious, buried in horror beneath conscious thought. Humour me, would you? And filled with icky monsters, and people turning into blobs with poison in them.

Now, imagine reading this as a comic book, with detailed drawings of weird monsters and misshapen pets and people. Next, have the viewpoint change every few pages, so you are following three separate groups, trying to keep up with the chaos and confusion. Who’s in the yellow and who’s wearing green?

Written by Cullen Bunn and Kyle Strahm, Unearth #3 is wonderfully drawn by Baldemar Rivas.
I love the premise, I love the art, but I feel as if the horror and ghastly cave moments are being prolonged beyond their best before moments. Time for some air, some condensed storytelling, and less confusion. But caves are cool, even ones that contain scary monsters and super creeps that keep me running, running scared.

Image, Unearth #3, $3.99 for 26 spelunking pages of content. Mature for horror

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
