The latest issue of Superman Up In The Sky leaves me a bit up in the air. Issue 4 of this DC title, collects two previously printed chapters of the title from the Walmart 100 page giants. So, it consists of two twelve-page chapters.
Written by Tom King, and penciled by Andy Kubert, inked by Sandra Hope and coloured by Brad Anderson, this title is typically a good entry point into the Superman series. Until now. New readers= new head-scratchers.
Superman is searching the universe for a lost girl. In chapter one of this issue, she recounts the famous race between Superman and The Flash. Who is faster? In a descriptive monologue that is astonishingly erudite, the little girl analyzes the race, its political ramifications, the no-win scenario, the personal dramatic implications of all of the persons involved, and on and on. Accompanied by full-page panels, dramatically rendered by Kubert. It’s a fun retelling, a story within a story, as improbable as it all is.
Chapter two delves into Superman and Clark Kent coexisting in the same outer space environment, debating whether to save the girl or not. Huh?
It’s a mixed bag this month, honestly. Less for ‘first-time’ readers, and perhaps more geared toward fans of Tom King and his innovative, thought-provoking examinations of DC Heroes.
