Writer Matteo Strukul’s story resumes in December 1451 on the border between Wallachia and the Ottoman Empire. Snowy, horses with soldiers in armour, a steady rain of airborne arrows hitting the fortification. Voivode and Hazma. Vlad descends as the wind whips along the canyon.
Sometimes sparse with dialogue, the story is aptly carried along by artist Andrea Mutti, who renders just enough to express the motion, the violence, the evil magic. It’s understated, sure, but surely this tale of epic ancient battle is enough to envelop the reader like a cloud of haze and disturbing ideals. The colours are red of blood, black of night, blue of cold and yellow of courage. The love, the betrayals, the downtrodden and miserable. Smoldering and brilliant, savage, and unique in the comic world today.
