In DC’s Wonder Woman Annual #4, we Enter The Lair Of The Dark Fates!
We start off on the ocean, under the warm summer sun, where Wonder Woman is riding an ENORMOUS Great White shark! Well, perhaps it’s a Great Great Great White Shark Shark. Whatever. Great fun for the Wonder Woman. No sign of Aquaman. Suddenly, she’s interrupted by a voice in her ear, presumably a Blue “Non-shark Tooth” Device. “Trouble at the mill!!”
It seems that there has been discovered a previously unknown group of Amazons in a ‘small oceanside city in Brazil’. Its actual name is literally a mystery because yesterday it wasn’t there! So, it’s definitely NOT the actual cities of Trancoso, Barra Grande, Barra da Lagoa, or even Ubatuba for example. Just sayin’. And hey, more Amazons, so cool!
Anyway, Wonder Woman confers with the council, and pages later embarks on a rescue trip to Brazil, where the Amazons are being held by a dark magic spell! By Dark Fates witches!!
It’s a long story, complete with physical battles, psychological battles, and bazookas-full of explosions. Things go bang, people go bad, the weather is rough. The tiny ship is tossed, and if it wasn’t for the courage of the fearless Wonder Woman, all would be lost.
Writer is Steve Orlando. Jack Herbert illustrates a highly detailed Wonder Woman, powerful and courageous. Head held high, fist in the air, that sort of thing. And well played. The facial expressions are earnest, the fighting glorious. There is an interesting interplay in panel sizes: sometimes a two page spread, sometimes a pile of panels jammed on a page. Variety. And smoothly coloured by Gabe Eltaeb. Sunny skies, clear complexions, unclear outcomes, red and yellow exploding inevitables. It’s all here in this comprehensive summer sky combo.
