Sweet Downfall #1, new from Scout, hits the eyeballs like a ton of bricks.
This new title is a wild wild ride in the land of crazy exaggeration and rocket science. Writer and artist Stefano Cardoselli (Fish Eye, Planet Caravan, etc) is a gifted visual imagineer, and this book is simply amazing. Colours are by Panta Rea, letters Bram Meehan.
Jonny is an old-model crash test dummy (!!) who’s been repurposed as a ruthless killer. The location? Santa Clara, a sprawling ocean-tossed city-state. Jonny is cool with killing and just follows orders, but suddenly has a change of heart. No worries though, this doesn’t turn into a Hallmark movie by any means. It’s gory, sweary, graphic, gripping. Cardoselli’s thick solid outline art style encompasses pistol blasts, disfigurement, sea creatures, and sci-fi elements by the bucket or by the pound.
The drawings are vastly detailed spectacular explosions of linework and colour, spectacular for their sheer audacity. Action never stops, blood never congeals, wounds never heal, and we never stop gasping and wanting more. It’s a teaser of a first issue, prompting readers to want to preorder the entire story, which is to be sold as a complete volume.
