Writing: Joe Kelley has written numerous comics and has worked in other fields such as animation with his team, Man of Action. Now Kelley returns with a new comic series focused on Jim Sargent, a grumpy old detective with a gripe that needs resolution. This comic is full of clever humor, satire, exaggeration, and ridiculousness. But, there is more to the book than meets the eye, and thanks to the writing, Kelley weaves in just enough story to keep investment in Sargent’s last hoorah before retirement.
Art/Verdict: Ken Niimura handles the art, giving the book a manga flavor that makes the book simple, yet fun to look out. Despite all of the details and layouts, there is a sense of minimalism due to the focus of monochromatic colors, which lends itself to the comic to its benefit more than realized. What really makes the art shine is how Niimura is able to portray characters and humor through gesture, which often sticks the landing. Despite the humor in this book that is peppered throughout the book, the art lends itself to the noir crime drama aesthetic that fits appropriately for this genre blend of a book. Despite it being a 40-page comic, it is a well-paced read and worth checking out for new comic book day.
