Your favorite Kaiju fan is back with another Godzilla review. Like the previous stories I’ve read, Godzilla: The Half-Century War perfectly captures Godzilla’s essence. It is an action-packed drama told from the perspective of Ota Murakami, an army lieutenant who has devoted his life to stopping Godzilla ever since he first set foot in Japan in 1954.
This story felt like a beautiful Mashup of every acclaimed Godzilla film. There were shades of Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla Raids Again, Godzilla S.O.S, and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. Still, the epic large-scale action and monster battles echoed Godzilla Final Wars without feeling jumbled.
The art is just as impressive as the story. The monster battles are drawn beautifully, and every classic monster Godzilla faced had their moment to shine, even if it was short. The human story is really good, if not memorable. Ota’s rivalry with Godzilla was so personal that I would love to see the character become an official part of Godzilla’s lore like Dr. Serizawa is.
James Stokoe did an amazing job conjuring such a massive-scale story filled with monsters that didn’t feel rushed. The time skips and Ota’s story felt naturally paced, and not once did I find myself lost or confused. If you love Godzilla and find it in your local comic store, drop everything and pick it up!
