The Flintstones the quintessential modern stone-age family and never has this been more apt than in this recent run of comics.
It’s election time in Bedrock with both town and school elections taking place with both looking mightily familiar with the candidate’s policies. Fred and Barney share concerns over the outcome of the town election via flashbacks to the war they both participated in to build Bedrock while Pebbles and Bambam worry about the school’s outcome – with the loudmouth bully candidate looking favourite to win both (can’t quite put my finger on who these remind me of).
This isn’t the Flintstones that we grew up watching and certainly not what I was expecting to read but I have been pleasantly surprised at how well this run has been written so far the first issue has a cover where Fred and Wilma are taking a selfie and the image is the cartoon version of the characters which I think is a fantastic touch.
This version of Fred and the gang are not Saturday morning cartoon kinda people, though, they like UFC fights and tackle subjects like wars, PTSD and suicidal thoughts or marriage and the rights of Adam and steve. Sounds depressing doesn’t it but I swear it’s not, its a really clever look at our own time and our own societies views but set amongst the dinosaurs and still very much keeping the humour we love in the Flintstones
Each issue seems to have a little insight into the backstory of either Fred, Wilma, Barney or Betty and it’s nice to see the origins of some iconic characters and scenes like how they came about Dino or how Bedrock got its name.
A really fantastic read especially if you used to watch them on screen and want to catch up now that both them and us are all grown up
