HE’S THE COOLEST CAT IN TOWN. EXCEPT HE’S A DOG. ‘TEEN DOG’!

teen dog 01 teen dog 02

Award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios is excited to announce the September debut of TEEN DOG, the newest title to join the publisher’s imprint, BOOM! Box, where comics are kept weird and made for the love of it! Created, written, and illustrated by emerging web cartoonist Jake Lawrence, TEEN DOG is the cool guy you always wanted to be in high school, à la Michael J. Fox and Ferris Bueller, except he’s a dog in a rad denim vest. Each issue contains short vignettes featuring Teen Dog, his best friend Mariella, Thug Pug, Sara the star quarterback, and many more. Teen angst and whimsical adventures collide in this new series that combines the feel of John Hughes movies with ‘90s Nickelodeon cartoons.

“Teen Dog. TEEN. DOG. Need we say more?” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “Our new BOOM! Box imprint is becoming a home for some of our favorite cartoonists and storytellers, many of whom are coming over to print for the first time. Jake, like many of our other BOOM! Box creators, has built up his audience on Tumblr. We’re continuing to carve out a place where quirky, silly, and just outrageously fun and experimental comics can thrive in print.”

Skateboards, football games, prom…your teenage years have got nothin’ on the raddest dude that’s ever graced a denim vest. Written and illustrated by Jake Lawrence (Time Cowboy), join Teen Dog and his best friend Mariella as they tackle typical teen life with a manic twist. Growing up is an adventure, and you might as well rock it!

TEEN DOG #1 arrives in comic shops on September 10th with a cover price of $3.99 under Diamond order code JUL140989. A variant cover by Jen Lee will be available in limited quantities. Not sure where to find your nearest comic retailer? Use comicshoplocator.com or findacomicshop.com to find one! It’s also available for order directly from boom-studios.com.

Levitz, Martin, Stelfreeze, and Story Return to the Baltimore Comic-Con!

Come to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to experience the Baltimore Comic-Con’s inaugural 3-day event on Friday-Sunday, September 5-7, 2014 at the Baltimore Convention Center! Returning to our show in 2014 are titans and veterans of industry Paul Levitz, Laura Martin, Brian Stelfreeze, and Karl Story!

Paul Levitz has been a mainstay at DC Comics since 1972, serving as a writer, editor, and President (2002 – 2009) over the tenure of his career. His name is synonymous with the Legion of Super-Heroes, which he wrote from 1977-1979 and 1981-1989, and he created such notable characters as the Stalker, the Earth-2 Huntress, and Lucien the Librarian. Levitz has since returned to writing the Legion of Super-Heroes for the New 52, as well as the Earth-2 centric book, World’s Finest. Earlier this year, Levitz moved onto the next phase of his career, accepting a Board of Directors position with BOOM! Studios.

Laura Martin is one of the comics industry’s most lauded colorists. Recipient of Harvey, Eisner, Eagle, Squiddy, and Comics Buyer’s Guide Awards, Martin is regularly assigned high-profile and event-oriented comics on which to bring her palate to bear. Her work can be found in DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, Virgin, and CrossGen comics through the years, and she is lately working on Dark Horse’s Serenity: Leaves of the Wind, Valiant’s Armor Hunters, and Marvel’s Uncanny Avengers.

Brian Stelfreeze, one of the original Gaijin Studios members, is a multi-talented artist, with experience and credits penciling, inking, coloring, painting, and even writing. His comic book covers have gained him much attention and lauding, and his run painting covers on DC Comics’ Shadow of the Bat for over 50 issues is noteworthy by itself. Brian’s creative output is found these days on BOOM! Studios’ Day Men and an upcoming DC Comics Batman variant.

Also one of the original members of Gaijin Studios, Karl Story’s inks have graced the pages of titles such as DC’s Action Comics, Nightwing, Batman ’66, Legends of the Dark Knight, Ocean, and The American Way, as well as Marvel’s X-Men and Dark Horse’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 among many, many others. You can find his recent work in DC’s The Multiversity: The Society of Super-Heroes: Conquerors of the Counter-World and Dark Horse’s Serenity: Leaves of the Wind.

“It’s so great to have such high-profile guests come back to our show,” said Marc Nathan, promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “From creative forces in the DC Universe to extremely accomplished artists, these four are friends of the show who we’re thrilled to welcome back, and we know their fans will be elated to see them!”

The Baltimore Comic-Con will be held Friday, September 5 through Sunday, September 7, 2014, at the Baltimore Convention Center, which is located immediately across the street from the historic Camden Yards sports complex (which includes Oriole Park and Geppi’s Entertainment Museum). After an amazing eight-issue run, the graphic novel collection of The Star Wars has soared to the top of the New York Times bestseller list!

The Star Wars is available in bookstores everywhere.

Salt Lake Comic Con Responds to San Diego Comic-Con International

Salt Lake Comic Con Logo

In response to San Diego Comic-Con International’s cease and desist letter, Salt Lake Comic Con (http://saltlakecomiccon.com/) is letting its fans and attendees know that the 2nd Annual Salt Lake Comic Con is on schedule and won’t be stopped by San Diego.

The second Salt Lake Comic Con will take place September 4-6, 2014 at the Salt Palace Convention Center in downtown Salt Lake City.
The recent cease and desist letter requests that Salt Lake Comic Con not use the term “Comic Con” for any event, logo, trademark or website moving forward because they believe it causes confusion in the marketplace. They further claim in the letter ownership of all variations of the generic term “Comic Con.” No formal legal process has occurred and Salt Lake Comic Con is under no obligation to respond to the strongly worded letter from Comic-Con International’s attorneys or comply with any of their demands.

“We want to assure fans, sponsors, partners and the general public that the show will go on. We will have another record-breaking event in September and we are currently under no legal obligation to change our current course in any way,” said Dan Farr, Salt Lake Comic Con Founder and Show Producer. “We’re prepared to do whatever it takes to protect our event, intellectual property and secure our ability to produce the Salt Lake Comic Con.”

Since receiving the cease and desist request letter, Salt Lake Comic Con shared the letter online. To view a copy of the cease and desist letter and resource page for this issue, click here.

A large number of media outlets have taken interest in the story and have written about it. The Associated Press wrote an article that’s been published in more than 59,000 news outlets worldwide. The story made the front page of Inc. Magazine, Forbes Magazine, internationally on the front page of the Australian Financial News and the Salt Lake Tribune proclaimed that in the court of public opinion Salt Lake Comic Con has already won. The story is being widely covered by legal publications including the World Intellectual Property Review, FindLaw, Inside Counsel and the Washington Examiner.

Salt Lake Comic Con’s attorneys are 100 percent confident that they will prevail as precedence against claims like this has been established by other Comic Cons and other trade shows including New York and Chicago. Salt Lake Comic Con’s confidence is supported by the fact that “Comic Con” originated in New York in 1964, prior to San Diego Comic Con. Furthermore, multiple “Comic Cons” existed prior to the Comic-Con trademark that was granted in 2005, including Chicago Comic Con (that was established in 1972), Motor City Comic Con (1989), Big Apple Comic Con (1996) and Dallas Comic Con (2002).

Comic Conventions and other similar events are becoming more and more popular and are being held in cities across the country from Salt Lake City, Utah to Boston, Massachusetts and from Little Rock, Arkansas to Stockton, California. In August 2014 alone there are at least eleven Comic-book conventions scheduled in the United States. By threatening Salt Lake Comic Con, San Diego threatens all conventions that use a variation of Comic Con. In the United States alone that number exceeds more than 100 conventions and the number increases significantly with international events.

“The cease and desist letter is baseless and under no circumstances will we surrender our Website, our logo or any of the other things called for in the letter, “said Bryan Brandenburg, Salt Lake Comic Con Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer. “San Diego Comic-Con cannot stop us from holding our show in September. Our attorneys have assured us that we have every right to use the name Salt Lake Comic Con and we hope San Diego is willing to resolve this amicably. We have the resources and are fully prepared to defend our rights and business against this predatory act.”

In one year, Salt Lake Comic Con has already grown to become the third largest Comic Con in the country. Its September event is poised to draw more than 120,000 fans. For more information about Salt Lake Comic Con, the country’s third largest comic con, visit the Salt Lake Comic Con website.

GIANT-SIZE KUNG FU BIBLE STORIES AT LARGE

kung fu bibleThe treasury edition will be available this September

After a wildly successful debut at SDCC, GIANT-SIZE KUNG FU BIBLE STORIES, edited by Erik Larsen (SAVAGE DRAGON) and Bruce Timm (Batman Adventures: Mad Love), will be made available at comic book stores nationwide on September 3. A deluxe limited edition collection featuring the original stories of the world’s greatest cartoonists, this treasury edition comic is a must-have.

GIANT-SIZE KUNG FU BIBLE STORIES has been years in the making and Larsen explained the origins of the project: “I’m not 100% when and where the idea went from ‘wouldn’t this be fun’ to ‘let’s do this’ but San Diego Comic Con is a likely guess. The title itself was coined by Bruce and it was a working title cobbled together from some of our favorite Treasuries of old.”

Citing the the classic comics of the ‘70s as part of the inspiration behind the book, Larsen went on to add, “DC had done this great Bible adaptation and Marvel had done this Kung Fu collection with new pages added and it just became its own thing. I’m pretty pleased with how it all came together. And it’s gigantic so it looks just great. Everybody who’s seen the physical book is just floored by it.”

GIANT-SIZE KUNG FU BIBLE STORIES includes seven awe-inspiring, pulse-pounding stories from Erik Larsen, Bruce Timm, Adam Warren (Empowered), Tom Scioli (GØDLAND), Ryan Ottley (INVINCIBLE), and Andy Kuhn (FIREBREATHER), and four breathtaking pinups by Arthur Adams (Uncanny X-Men).

“The old reprint collection Treasuries were great, but the books that really inspired Erik and me were the ones that were specifically created with the over-size format in mind, things like the Kubert / Redondo BIBLE STORIES, the various Marvel / DC crossover epics and Kirby’s amazing 2001 adaptation,” added Timm. “The artists realised these aren’t just regular old comics blown up, but instead really took advantage of the massive scale. SUPERMAN VS. MUHAMMAD ALI is ‘merely’ a typically great Neal Adams comic when printed in the standard-sized comics format, but at ‘Treasury Size’ it’s a thing of pure gob-smacking awe. So that was what we were trying to do—a collection of stories that NEED to be seen in the Treasury format. It’s just a really fun sandbox to horse around in.”
