Talking With Graham Miller about C.Y.M.K Ultra

I read a lot of independent comics.
A lot.
I read nothing from Marvel or DC. I only read three Image Comics. I read the occasional book from Dark Horse, Oni, Slave Labor Graphics, and the like. I love IDW’s current Popeye series and Boom! Studios’ Adventure Time and Peanuts books. But the core of my comic reading experience is reading the comics that are created by the LITTLE little guy/gal, the self-publishers who are trying to carve their niche. I am a self-publisher myself and I know many self-publishers so I try my best to support people’s work. With that said I have read some really brutal independent comics this year. Why were they all brutal? Three simple things – story, grammar, and art quality.

The comic book industry is generally dominated by major companies. Marvel and DC have the ability to advertise their books in every area of the media, giving them the lion’s share of the market. Marvel and DC, however, aren’t the only comic book companies out there. And they are definitely not the only companies producing great work. I find an independent comic series or graphic novel once a week that blows me away, that has that right combination of compelling, funny, and/or interesting story and strong expressive art that just deserves to be talked about by the whole comic community. These are the kinds of books that make me say to myself . . .
