My first thought was any comic that starts off with a trigger warning HAS to be good but by the end, the warning takes on a more important role.

Welcome to the Jook Joint, where all your desires can come true as long as you follow the rules, don’t follow them and, well you really do not want to break the rules. Mahalia is in charge and looks after her girls well utilizing all her powers to keep them safe and to punish those who would hurt them, the girls, of course, can easily look after themselves as Queenie quickly demonstrates.

There isn’t really an era or setting mentioned but the artwork transports you to what feels like a Louisiana bayou or New Orleans back in the 50’s you can almost feel the muggy heat and the can hear the music as the night goes on its incredible how it draws you in almost as if Mahalia reached out from the pages to pull you in herself .

The story itself has nicely dark twist to it that punishes those that can’t follow the rules which Mahalia also enforces outwith her club keeping all of her clientele in check in all aspects of their life. Mahalia isn’t just a punisher, anyone in need can come to her for help sometimes with a little nudge from her to give them the courage to do so not necessarily from a totally altruistic standpoint but still.

An excellent first issue and very likely a series that is just going to get better as it goes on.
