From DC comes Superman Up In The Sky #1, written By Tom King, penciled by Andy Kubert, with inks by Sandra Hope and colours by Brad Anderson.

It’s one of the first in a series of DC comic books that each collect two twelve page chapters of the original WalMart editions. In other words, if you have not been able to purchase the $5 WalMart comic books, this series reprints the new material from the Superman issues.

I explain this for two reasons: it’s good news for the typical comic book buyer who is NOT the target market for the WalMart 100 page Giant issues. Fans have been clamoring for access to this Tom King story for a year! The Giant issues are primarily intended for new readers and skew young. Likewise, Up In The Sky is labeled ‘Teen’ but has a lot of young people in the story. And it’s as good a jumping on point as any!

A young girl is missing in Gotham City. Batman is reaching out to Superman for his help. What follows is a search and rescue mission that will test Superman’s limits.

It’s a good solid story, with interesting interplay among the characters. There’s action on earth, and lots of outer space stuff too. Andy Kubert’s exaggerated drawing style is a hit and miss here. The kids’ facial proportions are a little odd, and so are some of Superman’s. In one panel, Superman’s wrist is almost as thick as his neck and legs! But overall, there are some great sequences here, rendered with care.

It’s all continued in the next issue, where we will advance the story by another two WalMart sized chapters.

DC, Superman Up In The Sky #1, $4.99 for 25 pages of content, rated Teen

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
