Eric Powell, creator of The Goon, and all-around causer-of-wild-drawings has managed to bottle and seal an autobiographical art book. It’s a BOOM! publication, and it’s as wild and wooly as Eric himself.

In copious notes, with the distinct feeling of someone making fun of themselves, Art (And Many Other Mistakes) Of Eric Powell is a detailed account of Eric’s beginnings, struggles, and successes.

Eric clearly has fun and is possibly ambivalent about talking too much about himself; a reluctant autobiographer. So, with many quotes, attributions and articles by real or imagined coauthors, we have a rambling, gambling, carousing rendition of Eric’s life.

The book is hugely illustrated but in a haphazard fashion. This is not a collection of stories or comic issues. Early drawings are posted with tales of Eric’s early days, but later on, things get a bit less linear. That’s not to take away from the power and glory of his work; there are copious illustrations of The Goon, Batman, Bizarro Superman, Black Knight, Spider-Man and many more characters. It’s gorgeous and high-level work.

Just look at it like a scrapbook, a studio visit, a smattering of the work that matters. Hang around for the whole book; it’s a fascinating glimpse into the skills and spills of Eric Powell!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
