Today we lost one of our greatest super-heroes.

When I heard the news today that Adam West passes away, I was in a state of shock. It’s been reported that his death was with a short battle with leukemia.

Like a lot of us, my first exposure to Adam West was on reruns of the 1966 Batman TV show. Growing up I didn’t understand camp. I just knew Batman was cool and so was the actor playing him. In my mind back then, Adam just really nailed the character. It was just awesome to see him defeat his enemies with both brains and brawn. Of course, the fight sequences were really what made the show.

I remember seeing Adam in the film Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Though he was only briefly in it, it still shocked me.

Adam would go on to voice Batman in The New Adventures of Batman and the final season of the Super Friends.

I remember him actually putting on the costume again in the TV specials Legends of the Superheroes.

I then saw him in bit parts here and there but when he voiced acting actor Simon Trent in Batman: The Animated Series, it blew me away. The inflection he was able to instill in his voice was amazing. You could really hear pain in his voice.

Of course, Adam would go on to voice a parody of himself as Mayor Adam West, so I can only assume he can take a joke.

No matter what the role he played, to me he’ll always be Batman.

Thank you, Adam. Thank you for opening the world of comics to a very grateful little boy.

You will be missed.
