The first Christmas Annual for The Wicked and Divine, from Image, is all about sex.

There’s sex between.. oh, let me just repeat what the creators of the comic, Keiron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie write in a foreword on page 2 of the issue:

“Amaterasu and Lucifer’s pre-godhood friendship. How Dionysus and Baphomet became friends. Inanna and Baal, getting it on. Lucifer and Sakhmet getting it on.” And so on, lots of adult scenes that had not been shown previously.

As a first time reader of The Wicked and Divine, this Christmas Annual is not for me; it is definitely not a tutorial on the characters in the series, nor is it a standalone story that can be understood by the casual reader; this reads more like a “deleted hot scenes” feature in your favorite DVD box set.

With this in mind, the artwork is very well crafted and colored. It is definitely a quality product, right down to the Christmas sweater motif on the cover. There are eight different inkers in this issue, each taking a few pages. Colors are by two different colorists.

Definitely for adults only, and best enjoyed by regular readers of Wicked and Divine.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
