The new Artist’s Edition from IDW/Marvel, featuring Gene Colan’s work on Tomb of Dracula, is gorgeous.

Artist Gene Colan, who passed in 2011, had a long run on the 70’s series Tomb of Dracula. According to a foreword by the writer of the series, Marv Wolfman, Colan heavily influenced the writing as well as creating the visuals. Wolfman gives Colan credit for paving the way for Wolfman’s development as a dialogue writer. It seems that Colan’s art was so lifelike that Wolfman until then inhibited in creating lifelike dialogue, felt the words come naturally. He adds that while Colan’s work looks heavily copied from photo reference, it instead, is totally drawn from Colan’s imagination.

The volume collects six complete Marvel comic stories as penciled by Gene Colan and inked by Tom Palmer, with all margin notes, dialogue corrections, and so on, photographed from the original art pages. Reproduction is excellent.

In addition, there are many many single pages from various issues of the series, including covers. Plus, 12 unpublished penciled pages that were omitted when issues 70-72 were combined in one oversized comic issue.

As I mentioned above, this is a gorgeous collection, suitable and highly recommended for Colan fans!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
