The first issue of Gamma is now available from Dark Horse Comics, and it’s a highly compressed head scratcher.

This comic issue has more jammed in its 21-page story than most trade publications. Things are popping out of panels, competing for your attention. Characters appear from nowhere, and voice-overs interrupt the proceedings on a regular basis. Layer upon layer of narrative. What is going on here?

In what is likely a very catchy and hilarious send-up of Saturday Morning monster animation, Gamma mixes Monsters with gaming, and costumed characters galore. It all starts in the Philippines in the 70’s, after the Great Sentai War. The new world, run by The Guardian Force, consists of costumed teens who fight monsters…

Frankly, it’s not my cup of tea but will likely appeal to readers who understand the parody aspects and loves the densely packed content. Some pages consist of up to 19 panels each! There are ideas upon ideas fighting for the readers’ attention here, so why not dive in and revel in the madness?

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
