Man-eaters, the new Image title that deals with a deadly cat virus, takes a real turn in issue 4.

Reminiscent of National Lampoon magazine, (for those of a certain age) the entire issue four of Man-eaters resembles an issue of “Cat Fight” magazine, “a boy’s guide to dangerous cats”. To be clear, this is a magazine parody, NOT an illustrated comic book issue!

It’s smartly done, really. Inside the covers of this ‘magazine’, intended for teenage boys, are ads for products that would appeal to boys, but they are all fake. The products are fake, the ads are fake. But the energy drinks, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent, and so on, all have the ingredient “Estro” added to them, a chemical intended to protect boys from the attack of teenage girls. There is an editorial, articles, letters, and even a subscription form!

As you probably already know, in this Man-eater series, a widespread virus has manifested itself in women. During her menstrual period a young woman, even one on preventative medication, could possibly turn into a ‘panther’, and viciously kill men in her vicinity. Suddenly, without warning! Women can be monsters!!

It’s all great fun, and brilliantly executed. The writer/creator is Chelsea Cain, and Creative Producer is Lia Miternique, with additional art by Stella Greenvoss, and additional writing by Eliza Fantastic Mohan.

If you like parody and can appreciate creative excellence, be sure to pick up this fourth issue!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
