Time for Marvel Action! It’s issue 1 of the Avengers, from IDW/ Marvel.

This title, intended for young readers, strikes an ‘accessible’ tone. It’s a friendly introduction to the Marvel Avengers crew for young readers, and a welcome reintroduction for those of us who have become lapsed Avengers readers.

The Iron Mechanic, Part One, is written by Matthew K Manning, with art by Jon Sommariva and colours by Protobunker.

The story centres around Iron Man. Tony Stark, out for a fancy meal with Pepper Pott, is suddenly trapped inside his suit, and remotely controlled by AIM. The Avengers get involved, and much confusion and fighting occur. There’s a lot going on here, the sky is filled with characters, and sometimes the reader will find himself/herself turning back a few pages to get oriented. The story is a good one, but can leave us confused here and there.

Such is the challenge of creating a comic intended for young readers. The key is to summarize and remind the reader of what they just saw.

The drawings are good, the explanatory captions are helpful. Let’s hope the best for Tony Stark as we head toward issue two!

IDW/ Marvel, Marvel Action Avengers #1, $3.99 for 21 pages of content. All ages

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
