This is one of the strangest titles on the racks this week, but worth considering: Sasquatch Detective Special #1, from DC.

Tonya Lightfoot is a sasquatch, okay? She’s become a detective in LA, okay? With me so far? And she has a human partner. There, all we need to know. Or is it?

Issue #1, this Special One Shot, tells us more: you could call it Tanya’s origin issue. In addition to the 30 page origin story of how Tanya became a detective, we are also treated to reprints of five short stories that first appeared in Snagglepuss Chronicles issues 2-6.

Sasquatch Detective is written by Brandee Stilwell, and art is by Ron Randall and Gus Vazquez. Colour throughout is by Ross Campbell.

The origin story brings us into Tonya’s early life, and is heavily tongue-in-cheek. No surprise, as the entire series tends to be built around sitcom style setups and gags, intermixed with a narrative. It’s an interesting combo, and makes for light reading. It’s not Sandman or Watchmen, but it is a new take on the ‘minority character trying to fit in and make the most of their life’.

Artwork is really captivating. As unnerving as it can be at times to see a sasquatch wandering around the streets, Tonya is well drawn. How she is humanoid but immense and gangly makes for some nice physical comedy.

DC Comics, Sasquatch Detective #1, $7.99 for 64 pages of content. Rated Teen.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
