The team of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips once again demonstrate how top comics are done: panel by panel. It’s Criminal #3 from Image.

Issue three is actually part two of the story of Jacob, who is ‘babysitting’ a former employer. The former employer happens to be a bitter, tired former comic strip illustrator, up for a lifetime achievement award. That is, if he can be kept sober, safe, and docile enough to get to the ceremony. But there’s the matter of the heist…

This is a real page turner. Engagingly written, smoothly and professionally illustrated, Criminal is a compelling read. It’s got the conflict, the ever-present criminal aspect, the sleaze and the dishonesty. And the heartbreak that washes it all down.

The issue concludes the main story, and includes plus a short prose story. Great value. Oh, just read it already.

Image, Criminal #3, $3.99 for 37 pages of content. Rated Mature

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
