Dark Horse Books brings us a springtime Fearfest with House of Fear, a collection of five (count ’em) illustrated stories written by James Powell.

Originally published as a series of comics available via Kickstarter, this ‘make em stay up late’ collection is intended primarily for younger readers. Powell has specifically ‘formulated’ House of Fear to challenge kids and give them a hearty and healthy scare. And by all reports, Powell is pleased with the response he has received so far from young comic readers.

The stories are prefaced by Boyle, an EC or Eerie and Creepy sort of caretaker. He is the curator of stories and delights in their presentation. And the stories are fun endeavours. They’re all about kids, naturally. And their four-season encounters with Monsters. Killer Snowmen, a twisted Tooth Fairy, a haunted house down the street and so on.

The dialogue can read a bit saccharine for us, jaded adults, perhaps, and stories sometimes progress a little too safely, but it’s likely that the intended audience will relate to the young characters in these tales, and have a good time reading them. Great price, at just $12.99!

The illustrators include Jethro Morales with inker Mike Erandio, and Adrian Bago Gonzalez.

Dark Horse Books, House of Fear, $12.99 for 144 pages of content, Assume a Rating of “E” for everyone.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
