Bravo for IDW, for releasing one of Alex Toth’s “lost” publications in affordable trade format!

Brave For Adventure, the black and white adventure comic, was begun in 1977, intended for European printing. The four segments were coloured in Paris and approved by Toth for printing. Then things got rocky. After a delay of three years, it finally saw print. Two more stories were created by Toth in 1983, and all the material to date was then published in Canada by Dragon Lady Press.

This comic has been hard to find, and out of print. Until now, where everything has once again been collected, along with rough pencil sketches and colour pages drawn by Toth.

Bravo For Adventure is a real gem and a reminder of how talented Toth was. This stuff is textbook comic storytelling. Toth’s concerted effort to simplified his drawings included accentuating lights and darks, aiding and navigating the reader along from panel to panel. The sequential panels are so artfully executed! There is no fluff, no extra baggage in these stories of a daring pilot for hire. The 1930’s setting provides the exotic flair, as do the small time hoods, the gangster’s girlfriend and so on. It’s like watching an old black and white movie… and the dialogue is bang on!

Great value and a thoroughly modern printing of this hard to find classic!
