Dark Horse and creator Mike Mignola brings us a really imaginative collection of stories in a hardcover volume. Our Encounters With Evil: Adventures of Professor J.T Meinhardt And His Assistant Mr. Knox could win the award for the longest book title of the year; is it worth a read?

Actually, yes, it is really good fun. The story and art are by Warwick Johnson-Cadwell, of “Mr. Higgins” fame. Johnson-Cadwell, based in the UK, has a really wonderfully quirky vision for odd characters and funky, strange settings.

The stories contained in Our Encounters With Evil are mostly about vampires and werewolves, but there are other ne’er do wells also. Johnson-Cadwell’s stories and old-style dialogue(s) are marvelous. The tales are about two somewhat stiff and ‘proper’ men accompanied by the ‘lovely’ Ms. Mary Van Sloan, following leads to track down monsters.

The whimsical and horrific events are by turns alarming and amusing, making this an odd assortment of boxed up treats.
Cover by Mignola, cover colouring by Dave Stewart. Contains bonus character and environment sketches.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
