With the new release of DC’s Wonder Woman in Black Label imprint, Wonder Woman Dead Earth #1 is given a compelling new makeover.

Daniel Warren Johnson takes on both story AND art, with colouring by Mike Spicer.

When Princess Diana awakes from a slumber a few centuries after Earth has been reduced to a post-apocalyptic wasteland, things are grim. And so is being double-crossed and abducted. There are caves, monsters, monsterous personalities and plenty of grit in this long tale. It’s so well handled. This is not the gleaming and glammy Wonder Woman from the makeup counter. There are no IG selfies and filters. This is raw, and WW is given a raw deal. This Wonder Woman is spunky, punky and tough. The book is earthy and bound and determined to keep your attention and win over your heart.

Johnson is in fine form here in giving us a mysterious thriller, much like a blockbuster adventure movie. And it’s full of reveals, story beats, detailed and scratchy art. The colouring is glorious and fitting. Scratchy and scrappy Diana: let’s check out this issue, support it, and buy the next issue too!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
