Simon Spurrier and Chris Wildgoose have a new title from BOOM! Studios, out this week. Alienated is the story of three teens who encounter strange happenings in the woods. But that’s oversimplifying a fun concept.

Spurrier (Books of Magic, Age of X, House of Whispers) and Wildgoose (Porcelain, Batgirl, Gotham Academy) bring their strong conceptual magic powers to the perhaps familiar theme: young, disenchanted students who make a startling discovery in the nearby woods. But thanks to their creative strengths, Spurrier and Wildgoose bring extra: their characters Samuel, Samantha, and Samir are individuals, quirky and real. But when their minds become linked together by unknown energies, the story takes a wonderful, imaginative turn.

Wildgoose contributes fluid gestures and expressions and stays far enough away from the ‘school of animation’ look to keep things fresh. The story is interrupted with scene titles, which get a bit obtrusive (or is it: intrusive?). Just pause around this stuff and let the scenes sink in.

Really outstanding colour work by André May! Beautiful moods come from his skills in warm and cool palette, with loads of subtleties between.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
