DC’s entry into 2021’s version of romance is an 80-page comic entitled Love Is a Battlefield. This $10 book features a really wonderful cover by Kaare Andrews, but is this enough to make us shell out our $10 and love it?
With writers like Sina Grace, Mark Russell, Christos Gage, Tim Seeley, John Ridley, and Pornsak Pichetshote, the talent is there, for sure. And the artists include Xermanico, Juan Gedeon, Karl Mostert, Rob Guillory, and several more!
It’s a full-fledged rose and blood collection, with Batman, Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Mister Miracle, Green Lantern, and even Sgt. Rock!
The ten stories here read like a Who’s Who of DC characters, but the good moments are transcient, little snippets pulled out of the love lives of the super duper ones. Like a slice of time, a piece of their day, a sip of their evening. Not “stories” in the traditional sense of a beginning, middle and end, rather a scene presented as a sampler instead. Would you care to watch a date with two people where a fight breaks out? Would you like a glass of champagne, and sit next to two people who are having an argument instead? No problem!
The magic may be mostly bubbly cocktail talk and wisps of suggested longing, but it IS fun to see the characters engaging in unlikely and uncharacteristic behaviour, if only for short tales presented for our quickly beating hearts.
