Issue #3 of Abbott: 1973 continues the retro tale of the black female journalist, Abbott, in Detroit. She has a new boss and is digging into political corruption. Things are getting rough: her place has been vandalized.

Writer Saladin Ahmed takes us back to the early 70s, the fashions, the habits. Artist Sami Kivela captures the visuals, the cars, the smoking, the drinking, the dial phones. Mattia Iacono lays on us the tints and sheens, the earth tones, the muted violets, and browns. Letters are by Jim Campbell.

The Ambassador Bridge that links Canada’s Windsor and US Detroit. The streets, the night scenes, the locale. Detroit in the early seventies, the background of ever-present and persistent racial tensions. But that’s not all that’s on the showcase with Abbott ’73. It’s the presence of the supernatural, and the reappearance of an old face from the past, as Abbott gets her crew together for some more drama!

Great reading, nicely encapsulated in a time of change and upheaval. Looking forward to issue 4 of this ongoing title. Dynamite!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
