Karmen is an angel dressed in a skin-tight skeleton suit. In Karmen #2 from Image Comics, Karmen takes a bit of a break. Instead, Cata, the young woman who is ‘under her wing’ learns to fly.
In the second issue of this visually stunning mini-series, writer and artist Guillem March (Batman, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Titan Comics and Europe Comics, etc) lifts us up to Cata’s level. The rendering quality, with colour assist by Tony Lopez, is astonishing. As if drawn from a bird’s eye/drone’s-eye point of view, much of this issue involves Cata’s experiments in the air. It is surreal, wonderful, and puzzling. The story is in the telling, and we are seeing things in everyday life from the point of view of an invisible naked flying woman!! “How European,” some would say.
But it’s not all ‘pie in the sky’ pandering and touring, there are lessons, life lessons. Cata has been left heartbroken by her boyfriend. Now is the time for healing and resolution, thanks to Karmen’s patient heart-to-heart discussions with Cata.
It’s not for everyone. There are no superhero punch-ups, no car chases, no serial killers phoning in bomb threats. But if you are open to nudity, open to new ideas, and Heavy Metal/Humanoid style philosophy, I recommend this title. The visuals alone are worth the price of the issue. Bonus pages include rough drawings from the issue.
