The three-issue miniseries Far Cry: Rite of Passage is a lead-in to the upcoming Far Cry 6 game. But does the story translate into the written comic book format?

President Anton Castillo is one tough nut. A tough son of a gun, and he wants his son to be tough too. Got it. And his only son, Diego, pampered and privileged, is going off-roading with Dad for his birthday. It’s a ‘grow up already’ kind of situation.

Bryan Edward Hill (Witchblade, Detective, screenplays, etc) doesn’t waste time in establishing the characters, which is a good thing. Son Diego awakes, dwarfed in a huge room with a view. His dad Anton debuts on a sunlit balcony, countenanced in shadow, facing away from the sun. It’s iconic, and a great help to those of us who have never explored the Far Cry game. Likewise, the lessons that dad is struggling to impart to Diego are harsh, but treated with a father’s care. Nicely handled from a dramatic point of view.

Artist Geraldo Borges (Avengers, Star Wars, X-Men, etc) provides visual entertainment with carefully rendered characters and environments. Borges employs a lot of black shadow to add dimension and ‘oomph’. Vivid colours are by Michael Atiyeh (Dragon Age, Assassin’s Creed, etc) and letters by Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt.

It all works. Jump into this ‘coming of age and it’s coming time to kill something’ tale!

Dark Horse, Far Cry: Rite of Passage #1 (of 3), $3.99 for 22 pages of content.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
