Red Sonja, as we have read and loved, returns with Dynamite Comics’ The Invincible Red Sonja #3.

And appropriately enough, Red (Sonja, may we call you Red?) is shown drinking and fighting on the front cover, illustrated by Amanda Conner and Moritat. It’s just a tasty sample of what unfolds inside the comic.

Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner write Red Sonja in a way that sure, conjures up sorcery, sword-fighting, and beer-swilling. But there is another level to their writing: smart dialogue, witty banter, and a tendency to get the language rhythms right. The scenes lead us forward, compelled and entertained. It feels as if these characters inhabit their space for reals, their fights and feels transmitted to us, panel by panel.

The plot involves a murder, and there is a rogues’ gallery of possible suspects. Motives galore, and well-illustrated by Moritat. (Matt Carter incredible on colours, Dave Sharpe tasteful on letters). Moritat’s line technique reminds me of Barry Windsor Smith’s Conan stories; confident descriptive line work; flowing hair, naked and scarred bodies, well-embellished textures, and dark tones. It’s appropriate and lush, this one, and you should leap upon your swiftest horse, and gallop down to your LCS for a copy of this issue!

Dynamite Comics, The Invincible Red Sonja #3, $3.99 for 22 pages of content.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
