Sometimes you stumble upon a fun new comic title that charms disarms and pokes fun at all the tropes. Thud #1, from Scout Comics, does all this, and more.

Written, drawn, spot-colored, and lettered by Bryan Peabe Odiamar, Thud is all about “Bo”. Bo is a man who has always loved drawing. As a kid, he spends all his time drawing characters, reading comics, and playing video games. And drawing some more.

Cut to today, when the unfulfilled “adult Bo” suffers from a sudden accident. Suddenly, the character of Thud is born! Fighting bad guys is his jam!! Is Bo having acid flashbacks or hallucinations? Is he really transforming into this massive, brilliantly coloured character?

It’s sometimes ‘indie-rough’ and has a hand-hewn, hand-drawn, hand-lettered appearance. But the green and fuschia blasts of colour, the stompin’ and poundin’ pages of action, all give us a primitive joy. Edits by Andrea Lorenzo Molinari.

It’s a fun story, full of the ‘origins of the comic reader’ fantasies that we have all seen before. But Odiamar gives us twists and turns, all the while staying true to his hero’s roots. What is the future for Thud? Read along and find out! It’s unpolished but a pure gem.

Scout Comics, Thud #1, $3.99 for 27 pages of content.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
