It’s DC vs Vampires #3, and it looks like the vampires are winning. Or at least taking a bite out of the distinguished competition.

It’s paranoia and blood lust mixed together. No one trusts anyone else, let alone anyone over 30. James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg cowrite this third issue of the twelve-issue series, and The Flash is evidently dead. Lying face down on the beach, with the DC characters looking at his costumed remains. What a beginning!

The tone of DC vs Vampires is an off-tilted mix of black humour and whimsical horror, which makes for an attention-getting reading experience.

Otto Schmidt contributes art, colour, and a front cover, illustrating our sleekly rendered superheroes with slender limbs and emotive expressions. His figures gesture and move freely. There is always ‘just enough’ in the panel to get the message across, but nothing extra. The panels vary nicely in shape and orientation, with plenty of moments of visual impact when something or someone breaks the panel walls.

Lettering is by Tom Napolitano. Variant covers are by Francesco Mattina.

It’s a good solid read, as we navigate among the heroes, the vampires who used to be heroes, the hidden agendas, and the visible mysteries.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
